Does God call us to suffer?

Reader,

I had a session recently where my client started things off on a completely unexpected note. "I need you to help me die well," he said.

He went on to explain he'd been diagnosed with stage four cancer. The doctors told him he had less than a year to live. Now, for the sake of his wife and his kids, he just wanted to die well.

In a situation like that, what are we to do with the concept of our "calling"?

We typically think that "calling" means: "my glorious, beautiful purpose to create great art or succeed in business to the glory of God."

But I believe calling is really about becoming fully who you are. It's about being forged into the person God is making you to be. If that's true, then your calling is to be willing to show up fully to the life that's unfolding right in front of you.

So, does God call us to suffer?

I think God calls us to be faithful and to learn to say with Paul, "I've learned the secret to being content, whatever the circumstance, and I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength."

Here's my question for you today: If you selected one word to describe what faithfulness looks like for you right now in whatever you're facing, what would your word be?

Maybe humility? Patience? Perseverance? Wisdom?

I'd love to know what your word is. If you're willing, hit reply and share it with me, so I can pray for you.

You are loved.

I am for you.

You've got this.

Reader, What would it take for you to live your life with no regrets? Many people are so busy just trying to keep up with their lives that they never stop to consider this question. When they finally have a moment to themselves, the last thing they want to do is evaluate how satisfied they are with their life. They turn to Netflix or bourbon or something else that will let them empty their minds and veg out, so they can muster up the energy to face another day. This cycle is a villain that I...

Reader, Do you know what makes me angry? I know so many people at risk of losing what matters most to them because they are trapped in the unsustainable grind of faith, family, and life. Deep down, they know this smothering grind is unsustainable, but they don't know how to break free. "If not this, then what else?" they wonder. The real deception of this monster called "the grind" is it makes you assume there's something wrong with you. Everyone else seems to be flourishing. Their lives look...

Reader, Don't just try to feel better. Try to be better. When we enter a new counseling or coaching relationship, we're often trying to fix our feelings. We say things like: "I just want to get rid of this anxiety that I'm carrying." "I'm tired of feeling down all the time." "I just want stop feeling exhausted by the grind of life." What we're really saying is: "Just help me feel better inside!" But the people who make the most progress in how they feel are the people who have the humility...
